Improving Pulse Production in Pakistan through inclusion of farm families in Groups for Collaborative Research (GCR)

This project introduced a new development led approach to the production and application of new knowledge to enhance the production of chickpea and lentil crops in Pakistan. This project built on practice change and inclusive learning. While the project aims are largely production based the processes involved technical improvement and learning for all participants. As DLI developed it was also included as part of the process. To succeed the participants needed to challenge themselves and the way in which they think. Research scientists needed to engage with and listen to and learn from farm families. Farm families needed to think of themselves as active participants who were participating in knowledge development and testing in partnership with researchers. The production of unexpected learning and changes in practice has been recognised as a core outcome from the project.

In this project Gavin has been responsible for the design of the project and for maintaining its inclusive nature. The project has included the Pakistan Government and its employees, as well as researchers from universities in Australia and Pakistan.
